Parents

Have you ever been worried that your son or daughter will struggle to find a job to suit their skills and abilities?
If you have, you are not alone. Often at the beginning of the year we receive many calls from concerned parents with similar thoughts. Even if your child is enrolled in a TAFE course, the ‘jump’ between employment and training can seem like a very long gap.

It can be a scary time for both child and parent with many changes going on in their lives. We aim to make the transition to work a smooth one by preparing your child for employment. This can be achieved in a number of ways, such as assisting your child to find a meaningful work experience placement and supporting them through this. Your child will be invited to attend our Work Preparation courses, and all clients undergo pre-vocational assessments with our Occupational Therapist that will steer us onto a suitable career path.

Transitioning from school to work is an important time for parents as well as their children. Parents have a key role in helping their children develop the right skills and attitudes for the workplace; whatever they choose that workplace to be.

At Jobmatch we encourage parents to be involved in supporting their children through this transition and feedback received from parents has been largely positive. One parent has commented:

“My daughter’s confidence and skills have grown over the past twelve months due to the work experience placement she has been doing in Administration. We thank you for your support over this time. My husband and I weren’t sure when she was going to find a job, as I know it can be hard for a person with a disability when they leave school. Now, we are really pleased as my daughter has been offered a job through the work experience.”

Jobmatch is also a Disability Employment Network (DEN) member, which means that, if at the end of the two year program your son / daughter needs further assistance to find employment, they can be referred to Jobmatch’s DEN service for further support.
